Punjab Government Considers Raising Liquor Prices

by The_unmuteenglish

Chandigarh, 11 December 2024: Liquor prices in Punjab may rise as the state government drafts its excise policy for the financial year 2025-26. Officials are reportedly considering a 5 to 10 percent hike in the prices of both domestic and foreign liquor, along with an increase in license fees.

Unlike previous years, when liquor prices were kept low, the government is exploring this measure to boost revenue and strengthen the state’s financial condition. Punjab had set a revenue target of ₹10,350 crore for the current financial year, achieving 80 percent so far.

Finance Department advisors have recommended price increases as a way to meet revenue goals. Suggestions from liquor traders will be reviewed on December 24. The current excise policy remains effective until June 11, 2025.
