Chandigarh, January 27: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini met Tuesday to discuss the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal, moving forward with a process mandated by the Supreme Court.
The high-level meeting resulted in a mutual agreement to maintain the current channel of communication regarding the long-standing water sharing dispute.
The two leaders spent approximately 30 minutes in deliberation, focusing on finding a path forward that respects the interests of both states. This interaction is part of a broader effort to resolve the canal construction impasse through diplomatic means rather than legal friction.
“We have agreed to carry forward the ongoing positive dialogue,” a senior official stated following the conclusion of the session.
The discussion was not limited to the chief executives, as Haryana Irrigation Minister Shruti Choudhry and Punjab Minister Birender Goyal joined the talks. Senior administrative officers from both state governments provided technical input during the session to ensure all perspectives were considered.
Future steps have already been outlined to ensure the momentum is not lost. The next phase of negotiations will shift to the administrative level, where secretaries from both states will examine the finer details of the matter.
“The next round of discussions will be held at the secretary level of both states, after which further action will be taken within the next fortnight,” officials noted.
