Chandigarh, Nov 8: The Punjab Police achieved a major breakthrough in international law enforcement by securing the deportation of wanted criminal Gurwinder Singh, alias Afridi, from Ethiopia. The key operative of the Doni Bal-Prabh Dassuwal gang was taken into custody at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi early Sunday after a 10-month multi-nation manhunt.
Announcing the arrest at a press conference at Punjab Police Headquarters, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav maintained that the operation marks a significant advancement in the state’s action against organized crime. He affirmed that the mission, code-named Operation SHAHID, was executed under the direction of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s ongoing anti-gangster drive.
Investigations revealed that the operative fled the country in March 2025 using a fraudulent passport before moving across the UAE, Kenya, Angola, and Ethiopia. The Punjab Police, through its Anti-Gangster Task Force and Counter Intelligence wing, coordinated with central security agencies and INTERPOL to track his movements, leading to his detention in Ethiopia on November 6.
Officials stated that the suspect faces 35 criminal cases in Punjab, including five murder charges involving political leaders, rival group members, and a minor. State authorities had previously announced a five lakh rupee reward for information leading to his apprehension.
