Chandigarh, April 28: The Netherlands has assured Punjab of its intent to import roses from the state, marking a significant shift in the region’s agricultural trade landscape. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced the development during a press conference in Chandigarh on Tuesday, following a diplomatic mission to the Netherlands and Finland. The delegation, which included Power Minister Sanjeev Arora and Education Minister Harjot Bains, focused on establishing direct economic ties that had previously remained unexplored.
“Currently, the Netherlands was importing roses big time from Ethiopia,” Chief Minister Mann stated. He noted that the delegation presented high-quality Punjab breeds at competitive price points to Dutch officials. “We showed them we had very good breeds and much reasonable prices. So, we can definitely make the difference,” he affirmed.
The Chief Minister declared that the engagement with international universities, industries, and the diaspora revealed a lack of prior outreach from the state. He maintained that horticulture presents a viable and profitable alternative to the current wheat-paddy cycle, which has placed a strain on Punjab’s soil health. To support this transition, the government has approved the creation of a Horticulture Experience and Learning Centre within the state.
Industrial interest in the region has also seen an uptick following the visit. Minister Sanjeev Arora stated that industrialists contacted for the first time by the state government have identified various investment avenues. “Many among them have already committed investments,” he asserted. Beyond trade, the mission secured a commitment from Dutch hockey legend Floris Jan Bovelander to visit Punjab and mentor young athletes.
