Khanauri, 2 January 2025: Punjab government officials on Wednesday met with protesting farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal at Khanauri on Wednesday, continuing efforts to convince him to accept medical treatment as his indefinite hunger strike entered its 37th day.
Former additional DGP Jaskaran Singh, heading the state delegation, confirmed discussions with farmer leaders regarding Dallewal’s deteriorating health. “We are committed to resolving this issue through dialogue,” Singh said.
The Supreme Court had granted the Punjab government until December 31 to persuade Dallewal to seek medical care, allowing the state to request assistance from the Centre if required.
On Tuesday, a vacation bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Sudhanshu Dhulia reviewed Punjab’s plea for a three-day extension to comply with the December 20 order, which mandated shifting Dallewal to a hospital. The matter has been posted for further compliance review on January 2.
State officials informed the court that Dallewal conditionally agreed to medical aid, contingent upon the Centre’s readiness to hold talks over his demands.
