New Delhi, November 14, 2024: In a tribute to Punjabi literary giants, the Department of Languages has unveiled portraits of renowned figures such as Amrita Pritam, Bhai Veer Singh, Shiv Kumar Batalvi, and Pash at Punjab Bhawan in Delhi. The initiative aims to celebrate the contributions of these iconic writers and poets by featuring their images prominently in the A-Block’s verandah and galleries.
Visitors entering Punjab Bhawan are now greeted with portraits of Bhai Veer Singh, a pioneer of modern Punjabi literature, and Amrita Pritam, one of the most influential writers in Punjabi history. On the first floor, near the Chief Minister’s office, the portraits of three celebrated poets—Shiv Kumar Batalvi, known for his romantic poetry; Pash, an icon of revolutionary poetry; and Surjit Patar, a contemporary literary figure—have been displayed.
Further installations include tributes on the second floor to Ishwar Chand Nanda, the father of Punjabi drama, and Dr. Mahinder Singh Randhawa, a key figure in the Punjabi art scene. The third floor features portraits of progressive poets like Bawa Balwant, Lal Singh Dil, and Firozuddin Sharaf, representing a spectrum of Punjabi literary history.
Jaswant Singh Zafar, Director of the Language Department, stated that this display marks the beginning of a larger project. Over the coming months, around 100 portraits of late Punjabi poets, writers, and thinkers will be installed across both blocks of Punjab Bhawan. The exhibition aims to inspire visitors and raise awareness of Punjabi literary heritage.
Resident Commissioner Shruti Singh announced plans to expand the artistic display within Punjab Bhawan, including adding more artworks that capture the cultural essence of Punjab. The renovation of the Punjabi Sahitya Kendra will also be prioritized, enhancing its role as a hub for literary activities.
Deputy Resident Commissioner Asita Sharma, Assistant Director Alok Chawla, and Local Office In-charge Karuna attended the unveiling, underscoring the collaborative effort to honor and preserve the legacy of Punjab’s literary icons.
