NEW DELHI, June 30 — Passengers travelling by Indian Railways will face a marginal fare hike beginning July 1, as the Railway Ministry on Monday issued an official circular announcing revised tariffs across multiple classes.
According to the circular, fares for all air-conditioned classes in mail and express trains will increase by 2 paise per kilometre, while non-AC classes in the same categories will see a hike of 1 paisa per kilometre.
The revision had been hinted at by ministry officials on June 24, but the official fare table by train type and class was only released on Monday.
Suburban train fares and monthly season tickets (MSTs) will remain unchanged, the ministry clarified, citing the need to protect daily commuters from the financial impact.
Ordinary second-class fares will not increase for journeys up to 500 kilometres. Beyond that distance, fares will rise by half a paisa per kilometre. Similarly, passengers travelling in ordinary sleeper class and first class will also face a half-paisa per kilometre increase.
The fare adjustment comes as part of the railway’s broader efforts to balance rising operational costs while maintaining affordability, especially for lower-income and frequent travellers.
