Sangrur, 7 November 2024: A 65-year-old farmer, Jaswinder Singh, from Bhawanigarh, Nadampur village in Sangrur district, has taken his own life by ingesting poison due to financial distress.
Jaswinder’s son, Jagatveer Singh, shared that his father went to his uncle’s car and consumed the poisonous substance around 6 PM yesterday.
When he tried to drink water, Jaswinder collapsed. Despite being rushed to Patiala for treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on the way.
Jagatveer Singh explained that his father had been under severe mental strain due to ongoing financial struggles.
“His paddy had been stuck in the market for over ten days, and he had been unable to get the necessary DAP for sowing wheat.”
The family’s only source of income, from their two-acre land, was barely enough to sustain them.
Jagatveer revealed that his father was burdened with a debt of Rs 5 lakh, which contributed to his distress.
The family, now left to grieve the loss of the head of their household, has appealed to the government for financial assistance to clear the debt and provide a government job to a family member to support them.
The villagers have also demanded that the government intervene to help the grieving family and ensure they receive the necessary support.
