New Delhi, July 22: The Supreme Court rejected an application seeking an urgent hearing on alleged law enforcement excessive force during recent student demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant declined to examine digital video evidence submitted by counsel, choosing not to initiate suo motu proceedings regarding the police response or the National Testing Agency’s operational framework.
The legal request followed the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march, where thousands of demonstrators gathered near Parliament to demand institutional accountability over competitive examination conduct. The bench directed counsel against consuming court time with unlisted matters, echoing a similar refusal by the Delhi High Court a day earlier to entertain immediate petitions on the matter.
Protests at the site have continued for over a month, organized primarily by the Cockroach Janta Party—a youth-led satirical movement formed following earlier public remarks concerning unemployed activists. The ongoing sit-in previously saw activist Sonam Wangchuk commence a hunger strike before his relocation to a medical facility by local authorities.
The judiciary advised that administrative and political grievances remain outside the scope of urgent intervention, advising parties to follow standard procedural frameworks.
“The court has no interest in reviewing video evidence of the event. Do not waste the bench’s time with this application,” stated Chief Justice Surya Kant while declining the plea.
The decision leaves legal recourse regarding security responses to regular court schedules.
