Chandigarh, August 2: The Punjab Cricket Association has officially introduced the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League at the PCA International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, launching a tournament structured to support grassroots development across the region. Scheduled to run from August 30 to September 13, the competition features six regional franchises competing in 27 round-robin matches. Prominent Indian cricketers, including Shubman Gill and Arshdeep Singh, attended the inaugural event alongside association officials to unveil the official logo.
The initiative reflects ongoing efforts supported by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to establish structured athletic platforms within the state. Each participating franchise will field a squad of up to 20 players, incorporating marquee figures, icon players, and regional talent selected from First-Class, U-23, U-19, and district levels.
Prominent participants expressed optimism regarding the league’s role in local talent development. “The Sher-e-Punjab T20 League is a fantastic platform for young cricketers to showcase their talent and progress towards playing for Punjab and India,” stated India captain Shubman Gill, asserting that the state continues to foster exceptional sporting talent.
Organizers noted that the project builds upon Punjab’s established history in national cricket. PCA Secretary Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer affirmed that the league aims to provide professional exposure by pairing emerging athletes with seasoned international performers. PCA President Amarjeet Mehta declared that the support from state leadership will help ensure the tournament’s role in advancing the future of regional cricket. Franchise owners were formally recognized during the ceremony, with player auctions scheduled for August 9 under defined team purse allocations.
