Chandigarh, April 4: A 17-year-old boy accused of fatally stabbing Panjab University student Aditya Thakur during a March 28 concert has been apprehended, Chandigarh Police confirmed on Friday.
The arrest comes nearly a week after the incident, which occurred outside the venue of a concert by singer Masoom Sharma at PU’s South Campus in Sector 25. Investigators also recovered the knife used in the attack.
“The victim was stabbed in the thigh during a clash, causing excessive bleeding that led to his death,” said a police official, adding that the brawl took place in an unlit section outside the event area.
Thakur, a 21-year-old second-year computer science student at UIET and resident of Hoshiarpur, succumbed to his injuries after 12 hours in PGIMER’s emergency ward. Despite attempts to stop the bleeding with a tourniquet, he had already lost up to three litres of blood.
Police had earlier arrested four others — all aged between 19 and 20 — two days after the incident. Among them were students from CGC Landran and Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26.
During interrogation, they told police that they had used fake ID cards to attend the concert. A minor altercation occurred while leaving the event due to crowding. After briefly separating, they regrouped outside the venue where they were urged by others to retaliate.
“Let’s teach them a lesson,” one of the accused reportedly said, as per police. The group, now armed with knives and sticks, ambushed Aditya and his friends.
Three PU students were injured in the assault — Aditya was stabbed in the thigh, Arjun Dalal suffered a back wound, and Aniruddha received a head injury from a stick.
Relief Announced for Victim’s Family
In response to the incident, Panjab University has announced ₹12.3 lakh in compensation for Aditya Thakur’s family.
Of the total, ₹5 lakh will come from the Poor Student Welfare Fund, while ₹6 lakh from the amalgamated fund will be disbursed in three equal instalments over three years. The remaining ₹1.3 lakh comprises the annual honorarium voluntarily pledged by the Dean of Student Welfare (DSW), DSW (Women), and Associate DSW.
PUCSC president Anurag Dalal, who has accompanied the victim’s father during protests, said, “The family has accepted the compensation and requested it be placed in a fixed deposit for Aditya’s sister.”
Aditya’s father, Parveen, was not available for comment.
