Kolkata, 09 November 2024: Three coaches of the Secunderabad-Shalimar Superfast Express derailed near Howrah, West Bengal, early Saturday, according to South Eastern Railway officials.
The derailment took place around 5:30 a.m. at Nalpur, approximately 40 km from Kolkata, while the train was transitioning between tracks.
“Two third AC coaches — an economy and a standard one — along with a parcel van went off the rails,” said SER spokesperson Omprakash Charan.
Despite the incident, no casualties or major injuries were reported.
Charan confirmed that immediate relief efforts were initiated, with accident relief and medical trains dispatched from Santragachi and Kharagpur. Buses were arranged to transport stranded passengers to their destinations.
The 22850 Secunderabad–Shalimar Weekly Express, operating in the Kharagpur Division, was passing through Nalpur station when the derailment occurred. The mishap led to delays and detentions for several express trains and EMU local services in the area.
“A departmental inquiry is underway to determine the cause,” Charan noted. Meanwhile, a helpline (032229-3764) has been activated at Kharagpur to assist affected passengers and their families. Restoration work at the site is ongoing as officials strive to clear the disrupted tracks.
