NEW DELHI, NOV 3: The Intelligence Bureau maintained before the Supreme Court on Tuesday that transferring Jagtar Singh Hawara, who is serving a life sentence in connection with the assassination of former Chief Minister Beant Singh, from Delhi’s Tihar Jail to any prison in Punjab could impact the upcoming assembly elections.

The intelligence agency further affirmed that Hawara falls under the category of high-risk prisoners and advised against any transfer to Punjab at this stage.

A Bench comprising Justices MM Sundaresh and PB Varale noted the observations presented in the intelligence report during the proceedings. Senior advocate S Muralidhar, representing the petitioner, declared that if election timing remains a factor, the matter could be taken up after a suitable interval.

The Supreme Court subsequently fixed the next hearing for February next year, keeping in view the upcoming assembly elections for the 117 seats in Punjab.
