Amritsar, March 4 – Two drug smugglers were injured in separate police encounters in Amritsar district as part of an ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking, officials.

In the first incident, police arrested Sahil, alias Neela, a Faizpura-based drug peddler, following a gunfight near Palm Garden Colony link road on Sunday night.

A police spokesperson said Sahil, who was running an organized crime syndicate involved in extortion and illegal arms smuggling, fired at officers while trying to flee on a motorcycle.

Police returned fire in self-defense, injuring Sahil in the leg. He was taken to Amritsar government hospital. Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said Sahil has multiple criminal cases against him, including three under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and one under the Arms Act. Officers recovered a .32-caliber pistol and his motorcycle.

In another encounter, police arrested drug smuggler Jagtar Singh while seizing a consignment of ICE (crystal methamphetamine). While being taken to a location under Gharinda police station for further recovery, Jagtar attempted to escape despite multiple warnings.

Officers opened fire, hitting him in the leg. He was later hospitalized.

Officials said both operations are part of an intensified effort to dismantle drug networks in the region.
