Barnala, Jan 22: A two-and-a-half-year-old girl, Zoya, was fatally crushed by a Scorpio in a tragic accident at a church parking area in Barnala on Monday evening.
The incident occurred as Zoya, running after her mother, was hit by the vehicle, with its front and rear tires running over her. She died on the spot.
CCTV footage of the incident, which surfaced later, shows the vehicle hitting the child.
According to the police, the Scorpio driver, Jaswinder Singh, a resident of Sirsa, Haryana, has been arrested, and a case has been registered.
Avtar Singh, the investigating officer from the City One Police station, said Zoya had accompanied her parents, Suraj Kumar and Anupama, to the church, where the administrative staff of Sacred Heart School had gathered for prayers.
Zoya’s father, Suraj Kumar, is employed at the same school.
After the prayers, attendees were leaving in their vehicles when the tragedy occurred.
Although the girl was rushed to a hospital, doctors declared her dead upon arrival. Police are continuing the investigation into the matter.
