New York, 27 January 2025: The United States has suspended all foreign aid and initiated a review of its financial assistance programs to ensure alignment with its “America First” foreign policy. The move follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, aiming to assess the efficiency and impact of aid distribution.
“President Trump has made it clear that the United States will no longer distribute money blindly without ensuring tangible returns for the American people,” said State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce on Sunday.
“Reviewing and realigning foreign assistance is not just prudent but a moral imperative,” she added.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has temporarily halted all foreign assistance administered by the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to carry out the review. Bruce explained, “The secretary is proud to safeguard America’s investment by carefully reassessing how these funds are allocated overseas. The directive stems from the American people’s mandate to prioritize national interests.”
The executive order also emphasizes Rubio’s focus on ensuring accountability. Bruce cited his statement: “Every dollar we spend, every program we fund, and every policy we pursue must answer three questions: Does it make America safer? Does it make America stronger? Does it make America more prosperous?”
Data from USAID reveals the U.S. provided nearly $45 billion in foreign aid to 158 countries in 2023. Recipients included Afghanistan ($1 billion), Bangladesh ($400 million), Pakistan ($231 million), India ($175 million), Sri Lanka ($123 million), and Nepal ($118 million).
Bruce reiterated that this review seeks to protect taxpayer funds and ensure alignment with U.S. foreign policy objectives.
“The implementation of Trump’s executive order underscores a commitment to reshaping assistance programs to prioritize the safety, strength, and prosperity of the nation,” she added.
With this initiative, the U.S. seeks to recalibrate its approach to foreign aid in line with the broader goals of the America First agenda.
