Mumbai, 27 January 2025: Maharashtra minister Uday Samant has raised objections to a dance sequence in the upcoming historical drama Chhaava, urging the film’s creators to seek validation from historians and scholars before its release.

He warned that if concerns arise, the state might block the film’s release.

Speaking to the media, Samant said, “The movie shows Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj dancing. The director should cut this part. This movie should be shown to historians and scholars. If they raise objections, we will not let it be released.”

Directed by Laxman Utekar under the Maddock Films banner, Chhaava stars Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and depicts his reign, which began with his coronation in 1681. It also features Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna in key roles.

Samant took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise the effort behind bringing Sambhaji Maharaj’s story to the big screen but stressed the importance of accuracy and respect.

“The life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, protector of religion and freedom, is significant in history. Efforts to share his story are commendable, but the honor of the Maharaj cannot be compromised,” he wrote.

He added, “Our position is that the film should not release without being reviewed by experts. Any objectionable content must be removed immediately, or we will not allow its release.”

Samant acknowledged the public’s concerns regarding certain scenes and called on the filmmakers to act responsibly.

“A final decision will be taken after the film is reviewed by knowledgeable individuals,” he said.

Promoted as a “stirring tale of a courageous warrior,” Chhaava aims to showcase the remarkable story of the Maratha ruler’s legendary reign, beginning with his coronation. However, with calls for revisions and scrutiny, the release of the film is now under question.
