Ludhiana, April 21: The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) apprehended Inspector Gurjit Singh, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Police Station Division No. 4 in Ludhiana, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000 on Tuesday. The arrest was carried out as part of the state’s intensified campaign to eliminate corruption within public offices.
An official spokesperson of the VB stated that the action followed a complaint from a local resident of Noorwala Road, Ludhiana. The complainant reported that her son had been arrested in a prior case and was being held at the same police station. According to the mother, her son claimed he was mistreated in custody and that his gold ring and silver bracelet were confiscated by the police.
The spokesperson declared that the Inspector allegedly demanded Rs 35,000 to return the personal belongings of the accused. The complainant, who managed to record the demand for money, subsequently approached the Vigilance Bureau to report the matter.
“The Vigilance Bureau team organized a trap after a preliminary inquiry into the allegations,” the official affirmed. During the operation, the SHO was caught red-handed while taking Rs 30,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.
The Bureau has registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB Police Station in Ludhiana. Officials maintained that further investigation into the incident is currently underway.
