Chandigarh, April 21: The Haryana government is expected to convene a special session of the Vidhan Sabha next week following the recent legislative setback regarding the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini will chair a Cabinet meeting in Gurugram on Tuesday to finalize the schedule for the session, which is intended to address the Opposition’s role in the defeat of the women’s reservation proposal.

The move follows the failure of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha last week. The legislation, which sought to provide 33 percent reservation for women, did not achieve the mandatory two-thirds majority after facing significant resistance centered on its connection to the delimitation process.

An official spokesperson stated that the state government intends to introduce a formal resolution during the upcoming session. The administration maintained that the session will likely be a single-day event, though the specific date remains subject to the Cabinet’s final decision.

The meeting is being held at the PWD Rest House in Gurugram, marking a rare departure from the state capital for Cabinet proceedings. Authorities declared that the location was chosen for convenience as the Chief Minister was already scheduled to be in the National Capital Region.

“Since the Chief Minister was in the NCR, it was decided to convene the meeting in Gurugram to ensure it was held tomorrow as planned,” an official affirmed.

In preparation for the high-level meeting, Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh reviewed administrative readiness and assigned specific duties to ensure the proceedings remain orderly. The government’s shift toward a special session follows a broader campaign by senior leadership to address the public on the importance of the Adhiniyam after recent national developments.
