Waste Center Fire Chokes Sohana Air

SOHANA, June 10– A fire at the municipal corporation’s waste collection center near Sohana gurdwara on Monday afternoon sent plumes of thick smoke across the area, alarming residents and significantly reducing visibility. The blaze, which ignited around 2 p.m., took fire crews approximately two hours to bring under control. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The rapid spread of the fire was attributed to the substantial volume of dry waste stored at the facility. Vinay, a worker present during the incident, offered an explanation for the sudden conflagration. “Someone threw a cigarette, which caused the fire and burnt tonnes of recyclable garbage,” he stated. “As soon as we noticed it, we informed the fire station.”

Before the arrival of the fire brigade, municipal staff and workers at the site attempted to douse the flames. However, the intensity of the smoke, visible from a considerable distance, quickly led to panic among those in the neighborhood. Residents described the smoke as rapidly spreading and causing discomfort in the surrounding residential zones. Two fire tenders were dispatched to the scene to combat the blaze.

The incident underscores concerns about waste management practices and their potential impact on public safety and environmental quality in densely populated areas.
