Mohali, April 12: Displaying remarkable courage, a 35-year-old woman in Mohali’s Phase 3B2 chased a chain snatcher who had just fled with her gold necklace, forcing him to abandon his motorcycle and flee on foot. Though the accused escaped with the stolen chain, the vehicle he left behind may provide vital clues to investigators.
The incident took place around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday when Navjot Kaur, a resident of Phase 3B2, was returning home on her Honda Activa after visiting the Phase 5 market. As she neared House Number 1092, a youth on a black Hero Splendor approached from behind and snatched her chain.
“I didn’t think twice, I just chased him. I knew I had to do something,” Navjot told reporters. “I hope he is caught soon so no one else becomes a victim.”
Without hesitation, she accelerated after him. A short distance ahead, the snatcher lost control and fell off his bike. As Navjot closed in, he abandoned the motorcycle and fled on foot, still clutching the chain.
She immediately informed the police control room. A team from the Mataur police station arrived, recorded her statement, and seized the motorcycle. According to officials, the bike bore a Mohali registration number, though investigators suspect the number plate might be fake.
A case under Section 304 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered. Police said they are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and verifying the ownership of the abandoned vehicle to identify the accused.
Praising Navjot’s bravery, officials assured that efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend the snatcher at the earliest.
