Mumbai, 17 December 2024: Ustad Zakir Hussain, the legendary tabla maestro who commanded fees between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh per performance, passed away on Monday at the age of 73 in San Francisco, USA.
Hussain succumbed to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung ailment, after a two-week hospitalization that saw his condition worsen in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
In a statement, Hussain’s family described him as “one of the world’s most transcendent musicians,” acknowledging his extraordinary legacy and global influence.
The Indian Consulate in San Francisco also paid tribute, recognising his unparalleled contribution to music and cultural diplomacy.
