Mumbai, July 6: Intense monsoon rainfall across Maharashtra has claimed 13 lives over the past four days, prompting administrations to issue severe weather alerts and close educational institutions in Mumbai and Pune. Emergency personnel are currently searching for survivors after a landslide impacted a residential structure in Pune district during the heavy downpours.

Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan confirmed the regional impact, noting that Mumbai, Palghar, and Raigad have experienced record-breaking rainfall. The India Meteorological Department responded to the evolving weather patterns by upgrading the warning to a red alert for Pune and maintaining an orange alert for Mumbai.

To ensure public safety amid the rising water levels, local administrations suspended classes for all government, private, and civic-run schools and colleges on Monday. A senior district administration official declared, “In response to the deteriorating conditions, local authorities took the decision to declare a holiday for educational institutions across Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Palghar districts.”

In Pune’s Maval region, rescue teams successfully evacuated 37 passengers from a private bus that became marooned near Ghorawadi railway station due to sudden waterlogging. Meanwhile, focused recovery operations continue in Patan village, where a local residence was compromised by shifting debris.

The heavy downpours have also caused substantial logistics challenges, halting interstate movement and prompting public safety advisories from the traffic police department. Officials have advised residents to postpone non-essential travel until weather patterns stabilize and major transit pathways are cleared.
