Amritsar, March 17 — The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has rejected the resignation of its president, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, urging him to continue leading the Sikh religious body.
The decision was made at an Interim Committee meeting held at the SGPC’s sub-office in Sector 5 under the leadership of Senior Vice President Raghujit Singh Virk.
Virk stated that all committee members would visit Dhami’s residence in Hoshiarpur to personally request him to resume his role. “The Interim Committee has unanimously rejected his resignation and appealed for his immediate return,” Virk said in a press statement.
During the meeting, the committee also approved the formation of a panel of academic scholars to review the central government’s new education policy.
Virk said the move was in response to guidance from Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib during the recent Hola Mohalla celebrations.
The panel will assess necessary reforms in Punjab’s education system and submit recommendations to the central government.
Besides, the SGPC plans to launch a major religious outreach campaign starting April 13, on Khalsa Sajna Diwas (Baisakhi). The initiative will include large Amrit Sanchar ceremonies at Takht Sahibs, where thousands of Sikhs will be initiated with Amrit, using the historic Khanda of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib.
The campaign is also dedicated to the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib and the 350th Guruship anniversary of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The committee affirmed that these events would be observed in line with Panthic traditions.
The meeting was attended by Junior Vice President Baldev Singh Kalyan, General Secretary Sher Singh Mandwala, Chief Secretary Kulwant Singh Manan, and several other interim committee members.
