Chandigarh, April 28 — Chandigarh recorded its hottest April day in three years on Sunday as the maximum temperature rose to 41.5°C, 4.6 degrees above normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
This marked the city’s second heatwave day this month, defined by the IMD as a maximum temperature exceeding 40°C and more than 4.5 degrees above normal. Sunday’s reading was the highest since April 29 and 30, 2022, when temperatures had peaked at 42.2°C.
The heatwave has been building steadily, with temperatures crossing 40°C for the first time this season on Friday. IMD Chandigarh director Surender Paul said, “We expect the temperature to touch 42°C in the next couple of days. Rain is likely around the weekend as a fresh Western Disturbance will start affecting the city from May 1.”
Forecasts indicate the city will experience thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching up to 40 km/h when the system moves in.
The strongest impact is expected around May 1, with chances of rainfall continuing through May 3.
Meanwhile, minimum temperatures also rose slightly, from 19.8°C on Saturday to 20.9°C on Sunday, though still remaining 1.5 degrees below normal.
Over the next three days, the IMD predicts maximum temperatures between 41°C and 42°C, while minimum temperatures are expected to hover between 21°C and 22°C.
