Muktsar, May 4: Amid rising public alarm over the drug crisis, residents of Muktsar district recently apprehended two drug addicts in separate incidents and handed them over to the authorities, reinforcing the growing role of community action in tackling the issue.
In the first incident, a young woman in an intoxicated state was spotted earlier this week on Abohar Road. According to officials, she had fled from Muktsar Civil Hospital where she was undergoing de-addiction treatment.
Concerned passersby noticed her erratic behaviour and informed the authorities, who escorted her back to the hospital.
In a separate case, a young man allegedly under the influence was caught after reportedly stealing clothes from a local shop.
Shopkeepers and residents intervened, detained him, and later handed him over to the police.
The man reportedly admitted to the public that he had sold 8.5 acres of land to fund his addiction, a revelation that stunned onlookers and underscored the severity of the issue.
“These incidents are alarming reminders of the drug abuse gripping our communities,” said a senior police officer.
“The public’s swift action shows how vital community vigilance is in this fight.”
Police officials have repeatedly urged citizens to remain alert and report any suspicious behaviour or addicts in distress.
“Public cooperation is not just helpful—it’s essential,” said one official, applauding the role played by the community in both cases.
The state government’s anti-drug initiative, Yudh Nashian Virudh (War Against Drugs), continues across Punjab with a focus on enforcement, rehabilitation, and citizen involvement.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav has set a deadline of May 31 for making substantial progress in curbing the drug menace.
“These are not isolated cases,” a local social worker noted. “They’re part of a larger, ongoing battle that requires everyone’s participation—from law enforcement to everyday citizens.”
