New Delhi, May 16: A Delhi court on Friday completed the recording of former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh GK’s testimony as a prosecution witness in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler.

Special Judge Jitendra Singh stated that Singh had been “cross-examined and discharged,” adding that the matter is now scheduled for further hearing on June 4.

During his deposition, Manjit Singh GK told the court he received an anonymous envelope at his residence in 2018 containing a letter and a pen drive. According to Singh, the drive included an audio recording in which Tytler allegedly confessed to his involvement in the 1984 riots.

Singh said he later handed over the material to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the case. He also claimed in court that Tytler, who was present during the hearing, had threatened a witness.

The case pertains to the killings of three Sikhs near Gurdwara Pul Bangash in north Delhi on November 1, 1984, a day after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Witnesses have alleged that Tytler arrived in a white car near the gurdwara and incited a mob, which led to the attack and subsequent deaths.

On September 13, 2023, the court formally framed charges of murder and related offences against Tytler under IPC Sections 147 (rioting), 109 (abetment), and 302 (murder), among others. Earlier, on November 12, 2024, the court concluded the statement of Lakhvinder Kaur, the widow of victim Badal Singh, who was killed in the mob violence.

Tytler was granted anticipatory bail in 2023 with a personal bond of ₹1 lakh and a surety of the same amount. The court had directed him not to tamper with evidence or leave the country without prior permission.

The recording of Manjit Singh GK’s statement marks a significant step in the decades-old case, which continues to evoke strong emotions among the Sikh community and beyond.
