AMRITSAR, May 26 —Amritsar Police arrested four suspects in the murder of Jandiala Guru Municipal Councillor Harjinder Singh alias Baman, just hours after the crime. One of the key accused was injured in a brief encounter in Chheharta on Monday.

Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi, an alleged operative of the Dubai-based Kishan Gang, was shot in the leg during an exchange of fire near Fatahpur and has been admitted to the Civil Hospital. A Glock 9mm pistol was recovered from him.

Two more accused — Karan alias Keeda and Amit alias Kishu — were also arrested later in the evening. The police had released the trio’s pictures earlier to aid in their identification.

“Within 8 hours, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police dismantled an organised crime network linked to the foreign-based Kishan Gang,” said DGP Gaurav Yadav on X, calling it a “major breakthrough” in tackling inter-gang violence.

According to police, Gurpreet fired at the police during the chase. SHO Chheharta Vinod Sharma returned fire in self-defence, leading to the accused’s injury.

The case is under further investigation to trace more members and unravel the full extent of the gang’s network, the DGP added. The operation is part of an ongoing crackdown on gang warfare and organised crime in the state.
