SANGRUR, May 30: The last rites of senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Member of Parliament Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa were performed on Friday at his native village, Ubhwal, in the presence of leaders from across the political spectrum and hundreds of mourners.
Dhindsa, a towering figure in Punjab politics, passed away at the age of 89 on the evening of May 28 after a prolonged illness. He was undergoing treatment at Fortis Hospital in Mohali at the time of his death.
A Padma Bhushan awardee, Dhindsa was widely respected for his decades-long contribution to public life and his role in shaping Punjab’s political discourse. In 2019, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in recognition of his service.
Leaders from various parties, including those outside SAD, joined family members and supporters at the funeral to offer floral tributes and share condolences.
“His contribution to Punjab and the nation is unforgettable,” said a senior leader attending the funeral. “He was a statesman who commanded respect across party lines.”
Villagers, well-wishers, and local residents also turned out in large numbers to bid farewell to the veteran leader, underlining the deep connection he maintained with his roots throughout his political journey.
