Chandigarh (Dariya), June 6: A 31-year-old private contractor, Shubham Sharma, died after being electrocuted by a high-tension wire while installing a flex board near Hotel Royal Plaza on Thursday afternoon.
Sharma, a resident of Dhakoli in Zirakpur, was working with two labourers between 3 pm and 4 pm when the tragedy occurred. According to eyewitnesses, Sharma had asked the workers to repair a light on the board, but they refused, warning of the live overhead power lines nearby.
Despite their concerns, Sharma attempted the task himself using a rope, which reportedly came into contact with a high-voltage wire, resulting in a fatal shock. He collapsed instantly and was declared dead on the spot, police said.
Locals and the accompanying workers immediately alerted the authorities. Police have launched inquest proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which deals with investigations into unnatural deaths.
The body was sent to the mortuary, and post-mortem formalities are currently underway.
An officer at the scene stated, “Initial inquiries suggest negligence despite clear danger. Necessary procedural steps are being followed.”
Police are also expected to determine whether any safety protocols were breached and if further action is warranted.
