CHANDIGARH, June 10: A 28-year-old man was arrested on Sunday afternoon for allegedly possessing over 9 kilograms of ganja near the Border Security Force (BSF) headquarters in the Ram Darbar area of the city, police said.

The accused, identified as Deepak Kumar from Vaishali district in Bihar, was currently residing in Hallo Majra, Chandigarh. He was apprehended by a police patrolling unit that had been deployed in the area to tackle a recent spike in theft and snatching incidents.

According to the FIR, the police team noticed a man carrying a large white bag. On spotting the officers, he abruptly turned around and attempted to flee, which raised their suspicion. “Our personnel chased and intercepted the suspect. Upon inspection of the bag, we found a large quantity of what appeared to be ganja,” said a police official from Sector-31 police station.

When questioned on the spot, the man identified himself as Deepak Kumar but failed to produce any valid licence or documentation for possession of the substance. Preliminary investigation suggested he was likely involved in the illegal drug trade.

A case has been registered under Section 20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Sector-31 police station. The contraband has been seized and sent for forensic analysis. Police officials said further investigation is underway to determine the source and intended recipients of the narcotics.
