CHANDIGARH, 25 June — The Crime Branch has arrested two men in connection with the recent firing incident that occurred outside a residence in Ram Darbar, Phase II, during the night between June 20 and 21. The suspects were apprehended on Monday near Ziri Mandi Chowk following a police tip-off.

The incident came to light when Samdarsh Kumar, a resident of Ram Darbar, lodged a complaint stating that an unidentified person had fired at his parked car, shattering the driver-side window. A spent bullet casing was recovered from the scene by forensic teams.

After receiving intelligence about the suspects’ whereabouts, police intercepted two youths riding a motorcycle near Ziri Mandi Chowk. They were identified as Monu Jaiswal (25), a resident of Hallo Majra, and Pawan (22), a resident of Maloya. Both were arrested on the spot.

“During interrogation, the accused admitted they targeted the car to send a warning to Monty, a friend of the complainant, with whom they had a personal dispute,” said a senior official from the Crime Branch. “It was an act of intimidation, not a random incident.”

Police also recovered a country-made pistol along with four live cartridges and a “desi katta” (locally made firearm) loaded with one cartridge. According to investigators, the firearms are suspected to have been procured through illegal channels, and efforts are now underway to trace their source.

One of the accused, Monu, has a prior criminal history and was previously booked in a 2022 murder case registered at the Sector 17 police station.

Both Monu and Pawan were produced before a local court on Tuesday and remanded in two-day police custody. Officials said the interrogation will focus on uncovering additional associates and determining whether the weapons were linked to other criminal activities.

“The recovery of illegal arms is a serious concern,” the official added. “We are investigating how these weapons were acquired and whether the accused are part of a larger network.”

The police also plan to question Monty, the alleged target of the shooting, to understand the nature of his dispute with the suspects.

The incident has caused unease in the Ram Darbar area, which has seen sporadic incidents of violence in recent months. Residents have called for increased night patrols and surveillance to ensure public safety.

As the investigation progresses, police have not ruled out the possibility of additional arrests.
