MOHALI, July 6 — Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia was on Saturday remanded to judicial custody by a Mohali court after the conclusion of his four-day extension in Vigilance Bureau (VB) remand. He has been lodged in the New Jail, Nabha, until July 19.

Majithia was arrested by the Vigilance Bureau on June 25 from his residence in Amritsar in connection with a corruption case registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was produced in the Mohali court the next day and initially remanded to VB custody for seven days. The court later granted an extension of four additional days.

During the extended custody, Majithia was reportedly taken to Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, where investigators sought to collect evidence linked to Saraya Industries. Sources familiar with the probe said, “The visit to Gorakhpur was crucial in following up on financial trails connected to the case.”

The court complex in Mohali witnessed an unusually high level of security throughout Sunday, with a large police contingent deployed to maintain law and order during Majithia’s appearance. Senior SAD leaders and party workers were stopped from assembling near the court premises, with police detaining several of them at various locations across Punjab as a preventive measure.

A senior police officer, requesting anonymity, stated, “Security arrangements were made in anticipation of political mobilization. The situation remained under control, and no major disruptions were reported.”

The SAD has yet to release an official statement following the court’s decision, but sources within the party indicated it views the arrest and custodial proceedings as politically motivated.

The next hearing in the case is expected after Majithia’s judicial custody ends on July 19.
