Dehradun, August 18: Heavy rainfall lashed Dehradun and surrounding districts, disrupting normal life and forcing the administration to close all educational institutions as persistent downpours triggered landslides across Uttarakhand. State authorities stepped up precautionary measures following weather forecasts predicting extended monsoon activity across the region.
“In Dehradun district, authorities have declared a one-day holiday on Tuesday for all schools from Classes 1 to 12, along with all Anganwadi centres,” official administration updates stated, noting that the decision was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff.
The Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for heavy rain across the mountainous districts of the Garhwal region, warning that wet conditions will persist over the coming days.
“Rain is expected to continue in different parts of the state till August 21, raising the risk of waterlogging, landslides and road disruptions in vulnerable areas,” meteorologists stated.
Landslides and debris accumulation have severely impacted transport networks, leaving nearly 97 roads blocked across the state while disaster response teams work to restore traffic movement. Water levels in major rivers have also surged, with the Tamsa River rising significantly near the historic Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple.
District officials advised pilgrims, tourists, and local residents to check travel advisories and stay clear of swollen water bodies to prevent mishaps during sudden flash floods.
