HANSI, AUGUST 18: All ten farmer activists arrested following the August 15 Independence Day confrontation in Hansi were released on bail after law enforcement dropped several severe provisions from the registered FIR, including charges of attempt to murder and offences under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act. The judicial release followed administrative decisions framed during a late-night meeting at the Chief Minister’s residence in Chandigarh.
“The government has now realised this and removed these sections, following which the court considered their bail applications and released them,” stated Advocate Vikram Mittal, who represented the activists during judicial proceedings.
The legal representative affirmed that the dropped provisions were originally imposed without proper factual basis.
“We had pleaded before the court yesterday as well,” Mittal stated, adding that the judicial magistrate granted bail after police formally removed the heavy sections from the case record.
The release came after a five-member delegation of the Jeevan Kundu Dharna Committee held a two-hour deliberation with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, ending early Monday morning.
A representative from the delegation stated that the state leadership agreed to withdraw all cases registered against agitators between August 4 and August 15, while also assuring the return of seized vehicles, ornaments, and mobile phones.
In addition to releasing the detained activists, the government assured financial assistance and welfare support for the family of murder victim Jeevan Kundu, alongside directed measures to arrest main accused Ramesh Sharma. Following these official commitments, the protest committee agreed to perform the last rites of Jeevan Kundu at his native village Kinala.
