NEW DELHI, Aug. 27 — In a sweeping reshuffle of the higher judiciary, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the transfer of 14 judges across nine high courts, the court announced Wednesday. The decisions were taken in two meetings chaired by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai on August 25 and 26.

The apex court did not specify reasons for the transfers, which will take effect once the Centre issues formal notifications.

Among those recommended for transfer are three judges from the Allahabad High Court and two each from the Delhi, Gujarat and Rajasthan high courts. The list also includes judges from the Madras, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Calcutta and Madhya Pradesh high courts.

According to the Collegium’s statement, the judges and their new postings are:

  • Justice Atul Sreedharan, from Madhya Pradesh HC to Chhattisgarh HC
  • Justice Sanjay Agrawal, from Chhattisgarh HC to Allahabad HC
  • Justice J. Nisha Banu, from Madras HC to Kerala HC
  • Justice Dinesh Mehta, from Rajasthan HC to Delhi HC
  • Justice Avneesh Jhingan (parent HC Punjab & Haryana), from Rajasthan HC to Delhi HC
  • Justice Arun Monga (parent HC Punjab & Haryana), from Delhi HC to Rajasthan HC
  • Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh, from Allahabad HC to Patna HC
  • Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal, from Allahabad HC to Calcutta HC

  • Justice Chandrasekharan Sudha, from Kerala HC to Delhi HC
  • Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju, from Delhi HC to Karnataka HC
  • Justice Subhendu Samanta, from Calcutta HC to Andhra Pradesh HC

The proposed transfers are part of the Collegium’s ongoing exercise to streamline judicial administration across the country.

This marks the latest round of large-scale reshuffling in recent years. In August 2023, the Collegium recommended the transfer of 23 judges from eight high courts, including four from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Those transfers were subsequently cleared by the Union government in October and November last year.
