Chandigarh, Dec 20: The India Meteorological Department on Friday issued a yellow alert for dense to very dense fog over Punjab for the next 48 hours, warning of poor visibility during early morning and night hours.
IMD officials said fog conditions could disrupt road, rail and air traffic, particularly on highways and near airports, as visibility is expected to drop sharply.
“Dense to very dense fog is likely over the next 48 hours. People should take precautions while driving and avoid travel unless necessary,” said Surinder Pal, director of IMD Chandigarh. “Those commuting should use fog lights and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.”
The weather office said fog has been persisting over the plains of northwest India since Dec. 18, affecting normal movement during peak hours. Officials said the situation is likely to continue over the weekend.
The IMD also warned of a possible dip in daytime temperatures across Punjab. “Parts of the state may receive light rainfall after 48 hours due to an approaching Western Disturbance,” Pal said.
Authorities have advised residents, especially those undertaking long-distance travel, to remain alert and follow traffic advisories until weather conditions improve.
