Chandigarh, Dec 20: A traffic jam lasting nearly half an hour was reported near Sukhna Choe in Zirakpur on Friday after an unidentified man’s body was found in a roadside drain, police officials said.
The body was noticed by commuters early in the morning, who informed the authorities. Zirakpur police reached the site soon after and secured the area.
“Once the body was recovered, it was shifted to the civil hospital mortuary for autopsy,” said Gurpreet Singh, Baltana police post in-charge. “At present, there are no apparent signs of injury, but the postmortem will confirm the cause of death.”
The incident attracted a crowd of onlookers, leading to congestion on both sides of the road. Police diverted traffic to alternative routes to restore normal flow.
Officials said they are examining CCTV footage from shops and buildings in the vicinity to reconstruct the sequence of events. Police are also working to identify the deceased and ascertain whether the case involves foul play or an accidental death.
Further action will be taken after the postmortem report is received, police said.
