Amritsar, January 9: A jeweller was seriously injured after being attacked by a group of armed assailants who looted gold worth around Rs 60 lakh in broad daylight near New Flower School in Amritsar on Friday, police said.
The victim, Mukhtiar Singh, who owns a jewellery showroom on Sultanwind Road, was carrying around 425 grams of gold when the incident took place under the jurisdiction of the C Division police station.
According to the police, Mukhtiar was riding his motorcycle to deliver gold to a customer around 10.30 am when a black car intercepted him on the road. The attackers allegedly rammed his motorcycle, forcing him to fall.
“The assailants, around eight to ten in number, attacked him with sharp-edged weapons, including swords, and fled with the gold,” said a police official.
Mukhtiar had reportedly taken the gold from his showroom to his residence a day earlier and was en route to make the delivery when the attack occurred.
Local residents alerted the victim’s family, who rushed him to a government hospital. Doctors said his condition was stable.
A relative of the victim, Saab Singh, alleged that the family had been receiving extortion calls for the past few days. “They were threatening to kill us if their demands were not met. We believe this attack is linked to those calls,” he said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishaljit Singh said the investigation was in progress. “The victim’s statement is being recorded and CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined to identify the attackers,” he said.
