Jhajjar, Jan 24: The mortal remains of Indian Army jawan Mohit Chauhan were consigned to flames with full military honours in his native village Gijroudh on Saturday. The 26-year-old soldier was among the 10 personnel who lost their lives in a tragic road accident in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir earlier this week.
An army armoured vehicle skidded off a mountain road and plunged into a deep gorge on Thursday, leading to the fatal incident. As the flower-decorated military vehicle entered the village, a massive gathering of local residents and people from surrounding areas joined the procession to pay their respects. Patriotic slogans filled the air as the community gathered to bid a tearful farewell to the young soldier.
“Mohit was a pillar of inspiration for our youth,” village sarpanch Naresh noted during the ceremony. He further added that the soldier spent his leave mentoring local boys for the army entrance exams. “He guided many youth in preparing for the written and physical tests, which helped several of them get enrolled as Agniveers,” the sarpanch said.
Mohit, who joined the Indian Army approximately five years ago, had recently visited his home in November to celebrate his first wedding anniversary. He returned to his post in Jammu in December. He is survived by his parents, his younger brother, and his wife, who is currently more than two months pregnant.
BJP national vice-president Om Prakash Dhankhar was present at the cremation to offer his condolences to the bereaved family. During the final rites, army personnel fired a traditional salute in the air to honour the martyr’s service. The ceremony concluded with the family and officials laying wreaths as the village stood in silence to remember a life lost in the line of duty.
