New Delhi, Feb 11: A new PGI satellite centre could soon be on the horizon for Talwara following a high-level meeting between Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. The move aims to resolve the persistent lack of tertiary healthcare services in the border areas of Punjab, where patients often face grueling journeys to reach major hospitals.
Harbhajan Singh told the minister that the geographic positioning of Talwara makes it an ideal site for a satellite wing of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. He noted that the town’s location near Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir would allow the centre to act as a vital medical lifeline for the entire tri-state belt.
“The people of this region will not have to travel to distant cities such as Chandigarh for treatment,” Singh said. He further mentioned that the current reliance on distant urban centers creates significant hurdles for emergency care and routine specialized check-ups.
This initiative follows years of persistent demands from local residents who have consistently raised the issue with various political leaders. By bringing the matter to the Union Minister during the Budget Session, the MP has sought a concrete commitment to improve the state’s healthcare landscape. The proposal is now under consideration as a means to decentralize high-quality medical services and provide relief to the rural and semi-hilly population.
