Chandigarh, Feb 18: Under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, the Centre has committed to a ₹28.50 crore investment to help Chandigarh manage its long-standing legacy waste issues.
According to data presented in the Lok Sabha, the remediation project has already addressed more than half a million metric tonnes of waste. Officials stated that while 5.10 lakh MT has been cleared, the remaining portion of the 7.67 lakh MT target is being handled through various modern processing facilities.
“My repeated interventions in Parliament to get the Dadumajra dump site cleared seem to be moving forward,” MP Manish Tewari asserted while reacting to the official progress report.
Despite the influx of federal support, the Union Government declared that the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and the local administration hold the primary duty for maintaining sanitation standards. The reply from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs emphasized that federal roles are limited to providing financial and technical assistance for 100% scientific waste processing.
Tewari noted several lingering concerns regarding the site’s management, specifically highlighting a lack of alternative arrangements for waste processing and issues with the current contractor. He maintained that the administration must address these operational weaknesses to ensure the project meets its final objectives without further delays.
The comprehensive plan for the site involves a diverse range of infrastructure, including construction and demolition waste plants and specialized units for digital science-based monitoring of waste flow.
