PATIALA, Feb 21 — The historic Qila Mubarak was transformed into a hub of traditional culture on Saturday as classical singer Raunkini Gupta headlined a soulful musical evening during the ongoing Patiala Heritage Fair-2026. The event, held in the open courtyard of the Durbar Hall, featured a blend of vocal excellence and a unique instrumental “Chaugalbandi” that captivated the local audience.

The evening commenced with Deputy Commissioner Varjit Walia leading the lamp-lighting ceremony using a torch lit from the heritage fort’s centuries-old flame. Raunkini Gupta presented a series of her own compositions, including Raag Kedar and several Khyals, followed by a tribute to her Ustad, Abdul Rashid Khan Sahab. She was accompanied by Ashish Raghwani on the tabla and Tanmay Mestri on the harmonium.

In a rare collaborative performance, sitarist Anupama Bhagwat and sarod player Debsmita Bhattacharya engaged in a musical dialogue through Raag Jog. This presentation was further elevated by the rhythmic fusion of Pandit Abhishek Mishra’s tabla and Abhishek Avadhani’s mridangam, bridging the gap between Hindustani and Carnatic percussion traditions.

MLA Ajitpal Singh Kohli and Punjab Mandi Board Chairman Harchand Singh Burst stated that the festival serves as a vital bridge for the younger generation to reconnect with India’s ancient musical roots. They noted that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, such cultural initiatives are essential for fostering a vibrant and “Rangla Punjab.” Municipal Corporation Mayor Kundan Gogia and other senior officials were also in attendance to witness the performances, which continued late into the night.
