Mohali, March 28: Lal Singh, a veteran leader of the Punjab Congress and former acting president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, passed away at a Mohali hospital on Saturday. The 83-year-old statesman, who had been battling multiple health ailments, leaves behind a political legacy spanning nearly five decades of service to the state.

A six-time member of the Legislative Assembly, Lal Singh was widely regarded as a cornerstone of the Congress unit in Punjab. His political journey in the Sanaur constituency began in 1977, and he remained a dominant figure in the region for 45 years. Colleagues affirmed that his political acumen allowed him to maintain significant influence and command respect across various administrations.

During the 2017 Assembly elections, the veteran leader adhered to the party’s “one family, one ticket” policy, stepping aside to allow his son, Rajinder Singh, to contest and win from the Samana segment. Party officials stated that Lal Singh was subsequently recognized for his seniority and unwavering dedication with a key leadership role within the PPCC.

“The veteran leader was a thoroughbred Congress politician who remained loyal to the party through thick and thin,” a party representative maintained in a statement following the news. His career was defined by close professional relationships with leaders across the political spectrum, reinforcing his status as a respected figure in Punjab’s public life.
