CHANDIGARH, April 19, 2026: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced on Sunday that the state’s legislation against the sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji has officially been enacted into law following the approval of Governor Gulab Chand Kataria. The Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which was passed by the Vidhan Sabha on Vaisakhi, now provides a robust legal framework to address and prevent acts of desecration.
The Chief Minister affirmed that the new law reflects the administration’s commitment to protecting religious sanctity and communal peace. In a public statement, Mann declared that the enactment marks a significant service to the people of Punjab and the global Sikh community. “I am deeply grateful to Waheguru for entrusting this humble servant with such a service. My heartfelt thanks to the entire Sangat,” Mann stated.
Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains described the development as a historic achievement for the state. He maintained that the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Satkar Act, 2026, serves as a victory for all individuals who hold the holy scripture in reverence. Bains affirmed that the law is a manifestation of the collective faith and sentiments of millions, ensuring that religious dignity is preserved through the absolute power of the state.
Addressing the long-standing demand for stricter justice, Cabinet Minister Baljeet Kaur asserted that the new law will act as a powerful deterrent. She stated that previous administrations failed to provide such protections despite their public claims. “This law will act as a strong deterrent against those who committed acts of beadbi with the intent to create division in society,” Kaur affirmed. She maintained that the legislation is designed to ensure strict punishment for offenders while promoting social harmony.
MLA Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar and MP Malvinder Singh Kang also lauded the move, stating that the unanimous support in the Vidhan Sabha demonstrated the state’s resolve. Kang asserted that the law addresses a global demand for justice and will instill fear in those attempting to disrupt Punjab’s social fabric. Additionally, MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal declared it a proud moment for the Sikh community worldwide, affirming that the legal framework will provide significantly better protection for the holy scripture.
