New Delhi/Chandigarh, May 3: A delegation of Rajya Sabha members led by Raghav Chadha is scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu on the morning of May 5, shortly before a planned visit by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. The appointment, set for 10:40 am, follows a request from Chadha to discuss the treatment of lawmakers who recently departed from the Aam Aadmi Party to join the BJP.
An aide to the Rajya Sabha member stated that the meeting intends to inform the President about the alleged misuse of state machinery in Punjab. Chadha asserted that the provincial government is engaging in political vendetta against the group of MPs who transitioned to the BJP. The delegation will reportedly consist of Chadha and three other members of the upper house.
Following this engagement, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is slated to meet with the President at 12:00 noon. The Chief Minister previously sought this audience to advocate for the recall of six rebel MPs who were originally elected by Punjab’s legislators. Sources indicated that the ruling party in Punjab is organizing a demonstration of support, with plans for 80 MLAs to travel to the national capital.
“The President’s office has granted an appointment to Chadha and three other MPs,” the aide affirmed, noting the significance of the timing. While the Chief Minister intends to challenge the status of the defected members, the Chadha-led group maintained that they require protection from targeted administrative actions.
The political development comes amid a deepening rift between the state leadership and the newly merged BJP members. While the Chief Minister’s team prepares for its meeting inside Rashtrapati Bhawan, the supporting MLAs are expected to wait outside the presidential residence to signal party unity.
