TARN TARAN, May 12  — District authorities have mandated the immediate deposit of licensed weapons in Patti and Bhikhiwind ahead of the Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections set for May 26. District Magistrate Rahul maintained that the restriction on carrying explosives, ammunition, and deadly weapons is a necessary step to maintain law and order throughout the election cycle in Tarn Taran district.

According to the official directive, individuals identified by the District Screening Committee must surrender their arms to the police or approved dealers within one week of being notified. The District Magistrate affirmed that the administration is committed to preventing any disruption of the democratic process. These orders will remain active through the completion of the election on May 29, 2026, ensuring that the result declaration remains orderly.

“In order to maintain law and order in the interest of the people, these orders will remain in force until the completion of the elections,” the District Magistrate stated. He affirmed that specific groups, including security forces and paramilitary personnel, are exempt from the ban. Sportsmen using rifles for recognized competitions and government officials on armed duty are also permitted to retain their equipment under the guidelines.

The administration noted that the sub-divisions of Patti and Bhikhiwind are the primary focus of these safety measures. Officials asserted that the policy aligns with the instructions issued by the State Election Commission to ensure a fair and secure environment for voters. Residents were reminded that the failure to comply with the seven-day deposit window following a notice could lead to legal action under the prevailing civil codes.
