Chandigarh, May 19: The Chandigarh Police Operations Cell arrested three active members of an organized criminal network late Monday evening following a brief exchange of gunfire near the Sector 43 Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT).

Acting on specific intelligence regarding the movement of armed suspects in the capital region, tactical units under the direction of the Director General of Police intercepted the individuals. During the encounter, the suspects discharged multiple rounds at the police team, with one bullet striking the protective vest of an assistant sub-inspector who escaped injury. Law enforcement personnel returned fire and successfully apprehended all three men after a short pursuit.

Investigators identified the arrested individuals as associates of a foreign-based gang network. Officials recovered three sophisticated automatic pistols and 16 live cartridges from their possession at the scene.

“Teams led by Inspectors Harinder Singh Sekhon and Satvinder Singh carried out the operation after receiving secret information regarding the movement of armed gang operatives,” a police spokesperson stated on Tuesday.

Preliminary interrogations revealed that the suspects were linked to a previous shooting and robbery incident on the Panjab University campus. Authorities noted that the group entered the university under instructions from handlers to target a prominent student union leader, and further investigation is underway to trace their broader operational links.
