Chandigarh, May 19: An Indian national rugby player from Punjab has achieved international recognition by winning a silver medal at the inaugural Central Asia and South Asia 7-aside Rugby Championship-2026.

Amritpal Singh, a student in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Technology at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, represented the senior men’s national team during the tournament in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The Indian squad secured a second-place finish overall after advancing to the championship final against Sri Lanka.

Prior to his international appearance, Singh established a strong competitive track record in major domestic sports fixtures. He previously participated in multiple All India Inter University Rugby tournaments and earned recognition for his performances in the Senior National Rugby Championships and the National Games.

Following the podium finish, university administrators and regional athletic coordinators extended formal commendations to the athlete and his coaching staff.

“Amritpal Singh has brought glory to the university and Punjab by winning a silver medal while representing India,” noted Dr. Pritpal Singh, Vice Chancellor of the university, during a celebratory briefing.

University representatives also recognized the broader achievements of the department’s athletic program, pointing to the ongoing international contributions of female rugby player Amandeep Kaur. Kaur previously represented the country in the Asian Rugby Sevens Series across China and Sri Lanka and was recently selected to join the RPL Chennai Wools franchise, positioned to maintain her participation in elite international fields.
