Varanasi, June 14: Providing specialized, high-quality medical care for elderly citizens remains a priority for North India’s healthcare infrastructure, with work entering its final phase on the state-of-the-art National Centre for Aging within the Institute of Medical Sciences campus at Banaras Hindu University. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted an on-site inspection of the seven-storey project to review the progress of the under-construction facility, which is being developed at an estimated cost of approximately ₹150 crore.

During the inspection of the ambitious 200-bed project, the Chief Minister directed officials of the executing agency to undertake the remaining work on a mission mode to ensure completion within the stipulated timeframe.

Emphasizing that there should be no compromise on quality, the Chief Minister instructed that all construction works be completed in accordance with prescribed standards. He also directed the university administration officials to regularly monitor the project and maintain strict quality standards throughout the final phases of construction.

The advanced facility, dedicated exclusively to senior citizens, will be the third such national centre in the country and a major healthcare hub for the elderly in North India. Once operational, it will provide lakhs of patients from Purvanchal and surrounding regions access to modern, specialist healthcare services under one roof.

The facility will operate a multi-specialty geriatric outpatient department alongside specialized units for age-related ailments, including a Memory Clinic and an Arthritis Clinic. It will also house modular operation theatres, intensive care units, advanced radiology, diagnostic services, rehabilitation services, and private wards.

Beyond direct clinical services, the institution is set to emerge as a major hub for capacity building and research. The department will focus on expanding postgraduate medical seats, training healthcare professionals in specialized geriatric care, and developing updated treatment protocols and medical guidelines for elderly patients, officials asserted.
